blog topic, and a RSS to head-tag question

Hi folks,
I have spent this week implementing an existing design using typolight. This is my first time using typolight - I have used modx and etomite widely before.

I have a problem showing the first entry of the news and a blog section - does anybody have a clever way of solving this? I can't get the newsreader to do this without specifically having clicked a "news link". Any suggestions?
Also, when set a news "channel" to also produce RSS - shouldn't this automatically insert the appropriate tags in the <head>-section and make this sweet orange icon appear in any browser?

I hope somebody can give me an answer by the end of the day, as this project is due tomorrow
